Perhaps the coolest eyewear at the moment are wooden sunglasses. Proof, founded in 2010, was one of the first companies pioneering this concept. Founded by three brothers in Eagle, Idaho, Proof is becoming an internationally known brand very fast. Superstars like Beyoncé are already showing off their wooden glasses. Proof’s complete collection is handcrafted from sustainable materials. They are not only environmentally conscious optics (eco), but very innovative, original and unique as well. Moreover, apart from doing good to mother nature in a very cool way, Proof also donates a portion of each eyewear sale to a charity in India treating cataracts.
Eco-friendly sunglasses come in bamboo, wood or acetate. They use materials from sustainable or managed sources. Wood species are used that are both strong and lightweight. The acetate frames are plant-based, not oil like most acetate / plastics used in eyewear. The frames are fully biodegradable as it uses the cellulose from trees and cotton.
An eye for detail
The attention to detail is another selling point for Proof eyewear. The wooden sunglasses are for example treated with a water and sweat protective layer and the hinges are made of stainless steel. Because they are crafted from wood, no two pair of glasses are the same. Proof eyewear ships in wooden boxes with laser-etched details on top and inside. Also the in- and outside of the frame are decorated with small details.
Go to Proof’s webshop. They ship internationally and their glasses are priced around USD 100.
