Unilever announces a competition to generate ideas for the development of a next-generation sustainable shower. According to Unilever, the hot water its consumers use to enjoy Unilever products create a substantial greenhouse gas footprint. Unilever therefore challenges its consumers, inventors and entrepreneurs to come up with groundbreaking ideas for the development of the next generation of showers. Cutting shower times by one minute a day for 200 million households in the US alone would save 26 billion gallons of water and 1.3 million tonnes of carbon.
Guidelines for sustainable shower contest
The new line of showers should use less water while ensuring that consumers still enjoy their shower moment of the day. Innovative entrepreneurs can compete by submitting their technological solutions through the Open Innovation Portal of Unilever. Guidelines for creative ideas include measurable improvement to hot water requirements, measurable data on convenience and comfort as well as being safe for humans. The winning design should use no more than 10 liters of water per use.
Sustainable Living Plan
The contest is part of Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, in which it aims to reduce its global footprint and encourage people to adopt sustainable behavior. Deadline for submission of Unilevers crowdsourcing competition is September 8th, with the winners receiving $ 10.000 and a trip to London to create the concept.
