More than 3 billion people wordwide cook with wood, cow dung or agro-waste in open fires or traditional mud stoves. This is very inefficient and causes a lot of smoke and soot. This has a large negative impact on health and the environment.
Many households in Asia and Africa cook indoors. This results in highly polluted household air causes diseases such as lung cancer, pneumonia and chronic heart diseases. Studies show that 4 million premature deaths are caused by this household air pollution per year.
Traditional mud stoves cause environmental problems related to the biomass fuels used and the greenhouse gases emitted. A lot of trees and vegetations are cut down to harvest wood which then is burned very inefficiently in the mud stove. In turn, the depletion of forests destroys soil quality and agricultural land. Moreover, mud cookstoves emit greenhouse gases such as carbon monoxide, methane and carbon dioxide. Even worse, they contribute to 25% of the global black carbon emissions. After CO2, Black carbon is the second worse contributor to global warming.
Greenway Smart Stove reduces smoke emissions by 70%
Greenway co-created the Smart Stove which produces 70% less smoke and 65% less fuel than traditional mud cookstoves. The lampshade-shaped reducer cone inside the stove pulls air up through the bottom into the combustion chamber, resulting in more efficient fuel burning and less smoke. Users in India immediately notice the difference because they caugh less and have less stingy eyes.
The Rocket Stove business model
The Greenway Smart Stove is based on the rocket stove design first developed by Dr. Larry Winiarski in 1980. Although the rocket stoves are predominantly used by third world countries, they are being introduced to developed countries as well. For example, BioLite introduced an energy-producing CampStove for outdoor enthusiasts using a thermoelectric generator. It converts the heat of fire into reusable energy to for example power a fan or charge portable devices using a USB port. The CampStove replaces traditional camping stoves based on petroleum or charcoal. With the proceeds of the CampStove, they subsidize the HomeStove which is being marketed in developing countries in Asia and Africa.
